So what is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is the method we use to increase the amount of visitors to your website by improving the rank of your website in the search engine results pages (SERP) such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines. Most SEO specialist focus on Google as it is the biggest search engine but we must also make sure your site is equally visible on the other search engines as lots of people still use them.

Why do you need SEO services?

Because you want to be top of Google. The idea of most websites is attract more visitors to your website to advertise your services or products. You can have the best website in the world but if no-one can find it isn't much use to your business. A high ranking website is probably the best advertising you can do for your business. If you rank well it shows you are serious about what you do and you have invested time and money into standing out from your competition.

How does it work?

There are two main ways you can ensure your website is visible to others on the first page of Google. Organic SEO and Pay per Click advertising (PPC).

organic and ppc advertising

Organic SEO vs. PPC, which is better?

Organic SEO and PPC both have their place. If done correctly, I believe you can completely rely on organic SEO alone but this process may take time. The best solution is to use a mix of both together when you need to.

Google PPC Advertising

PPC is very useful in the beginning as it can have instant results. So when you have a brand new website it can get you onto the first page of Google straight away but the downside is this can be expensive. Some customers don't want to spend the money straight away due to having just spent a lot of money on their website. The cost of PPC varies wildly based primarily on the competitiveness of the keyword you are trying to target. Some costs per click (CPC) can be as much as $30 per click! So again PPC depends on how much you can afford to spend. Google have also changed the way it works so before you could choose a monthly budget with a high CPC but now you have to choose a daily budget, ultimately meaning more money for Google. An example of this is the plumbing industry. The keyword plumber has a high CPC value and a lot of smaller plumbing companies cannot afford to compete against the big boys. Otherwise they will be paying thousands of dollars a month in clicks before they have done any work. Bear in mind these guys still have to go out and quote on the job and may not get it. It doesn't cost the customer anything to click your ad and get you out for a quote.

Organic SEO

This is real search engine optimisation and my preferred strategy. This is the proper method of optimising the content and META tags on your website pages to increase the rank of your website. If you do this yourself it won't cost you anything except your time and I am happy to explain to you how to do it. There is a bit of an art to it but it is nothing you cannot learn to do yourself. As the old maxim goes, you get out what you put in. Some customers don't have the time to do their SEO and so they would rather pay me to do it for them. However, the benefit of doing organic SEO correctly means that once it is working properly, depending on the competition in your market, you won't have to keep paying for it. By paying me to improve the rank of your website, you are paying for my many years experience optimising websites to ensure it is done correctly and it can be a lot cheaper than PPC.

Case Study

I recently dealt with a customer that was fed up with paying the costs of Google PPC and furthermore paying another certain large organisation, who shall remain nameless, to manage it for them. Suffice to say their main corporate colour is yellow, nuff said.

The customer owns a fairly large plumbing company and was paying $16800 per year in management fees and PPC fees!! This wouldn't have been so bad if the company managing their SEO had even the first clue about what they were doing. Their contract with the 'yellow company' was coming to an end so I advised them to cancel it and let me have a go. With a few simple tweaks, as they already had a pretty decent website, I managed to get them to number one on Google for most of their search terms whereas before they were languishing on page two or at best the bottom of page one for their main search term. Consequently, they were delighted and are now saving a fortune in advertising costs.
